The classic love of fall.

This week I received two packages from both my Mom and best friend. One contained Apple Cider K-cups and a deliciously scented, Pumpkin Spice candle, while the other contained Cinnamon Spice coffee and a Yankee candle smelling of autumn wreath.

From this one can draw two assumptions: one, my loved ones know me very well, and two, fall is an incredible season to be celebrated. I used to disregard fall altogether, deeming snowy winters and swimming filled summers more exciting than leaves falling—I found it depressing and it seemed that only “old people” appreciated it. Well, I must have gotten old this year because I found myself craving the crispy chill of fall.

There is something inspiring about this season, it thrills me to enjoy the unique characteristics that fall brings and the fact that it leads to Thanksgiving and Christmas (my two favorite holidays).  In fact, the surprise gifts inspired me to take a break from the books and spend some moments enjoying this season of life; after all, this is the only fall that I will spend as a newlywed, at Northland, and probably in WI. Beyond the candles and fall drinks, I have been appreciating certain aspects of this particular fall in our little apartment. So I have decided to journal a paragraph in summary of my fall thus far:

The fresh, red apples sitting in a basket on my counter, gifted to us by some friends from church. My small, white pumpkin and the two large, orange pumpkins that we plan to carve and roast seeds this weekend. The flaming reds in the trees, or as Dr. Brown stated this morning, “God took his paintbrushes and dappled brilliant reds, oranges, and yellows throughout the leaves.” Stepping into the brisk air completely enveloped in a cozy, knit sweater. The smells—one of my favorite aspects of fall and winter is that all of the smells are inspired after food, comfort food. In loo of that, making “baked good smells” with pumpkin, banana, cloves, and allspice. Spontaneous trips to the Grind which entail sipping on “Fall-in-a-cup” while struggling to focus on homework because of getting lost in the beauty outside the window. Decorating the house to look like a home and coming up with new ideas to celebrate the season—implementing leaves and vibrant jewel tones. Listening to the “Ready for Fall” Pandora station—oldies, instrumentals, and Michael Buble. Feeling accomplished while canning and growing indoor herbs to be enjoyed throughout the winter. The spirit of thankfulness that fall inspires—with Thanksgiving as a final celebration of that season. The crunch of leaves underfoot while on an evening stroll. Selecting tidbits of inspiration to add to the Pinterest board for seasonal ideas. The structure of a school and work schedule, while enjoying the last few outdoor evenings for this year. Holding Andrew’s hand not only because I love him, but also because mine are perpetually cold and his always exude warmth. Finally, watching my yearly minimum of a seasonal requirement, “You’ve Got Mail.” “I would send you a bouquet of freshly sharpened pencils…” states Tom Hanks in writing to Meg Ryan. I find it hard to not write an entire entry on that phrase alone, being a lover of adjectives and the vivid imagery that comes to mind upon hearing it.

After reading all of this, I think can safely say that I enjoy being “old.”

Happy fall.
